Children’s orthodontics
Children’s orthodontics corrects the alignment of the teeth and jaw in young patients, while also guiding bone growth.
Children’s orthodontics isimportantfor several reasons
- It corrects misaligned teeth, overlapping teeth and gaps between teeth.
- It guides bone growth to correct the position of the jaws.
- Early diagnosis simplifies future treatment and can sometimes help avoid surgery.
- It helps prevent future dental problems and improves how the mouth functions.
Total treatment time depends on the complexity of the correction needed: it usually ranges from 6 months to several years.
Here are thestepsof children’s orthodontics
-
Assessment
Your child sees an orthodontist, who assesses the position of the teeth and jaw. A treatment plan is then developed based on 3D images, photos and dental X-rays.
-
Treatment
An appliance, usually removable, first corrects the jawbones. Fixed appliances, with brackets and wires, are then placed on the teeth to correct their alignment.
-
Retention
At the end of treatment, a retainer wire holds the teeth in their new position. Your child can then enjoy well-aligned teeth and a proper bite.

Orthodonticsinterceptiveand preventive
Preventive and interceptive orthodontics is early treatment, recommended when problems are detected early, before they become more complex and harder to treat.

Frequently askedquestions
Have a question?
We’re happy to answer any questions you may have. Feel free to write to us or give us a call.
Why should my child see an orthodontist at a young age?
An early diagnosis can prevent more serious problems, simplify future treatment and, in some cases, avoid surgery.
My child sucks their thumb: do they need orthodontic treatment?
Prolonged thumb sucking can affect jaw growth and tooth alignment. If the habit continues past age 4, a visit to the orthodontist may be needed.
How long does orthodontic treatment take for a child?
It depends on the complexity of the correction needed. Treatment generally lasts from 6 months to several years.
What care is needed during treatment?
It’s important to follow the orthodontist’s instructions: caring for the appliance, good oral hygiene, frequent cleanings, managing discomfort and attending follow-up appointments.
