Scaling and cleaning

Dental scaling and cleaning is a professional treatment that deeply cleans your teeth and gums by removing tartar and dental plaque.

Dental scaling and cleaning isimportantfor several reasons

  • It removes the plaque and tartar that build up on teeth and can lead to cavities and gum problems.
  • It helps prevent bad breath.
  • It helps remove stains and discoloration, leaving your teeth and gums looking cleaner and healthier.
  • It helps prevent periodontal disease and possible premature tooth loss.

Scaling and cleaning is recommended every six months or once a year, depending on each person’s individual needs.

Here are thestepsof dental scaling and cleaning

  1. Preparation

Before the cleaning, the dental hygienist examines your mouth and teeth to make sure there is no reason not to proceed. She may also take X-rays to check the condition of your teeth and the alveolar bone.

  2. Cleaning the teeth

To remove plaque and tartar, the dental hygienist uses an ultrasonic scaler. This device sends out vibrations that help break away plaque and tartar.

  3. Removing residue

Any remaining tartar and plaque is removed with hand instruments (curettes, scalers).

Why is scaling and cleaning important?

Scaling and cleaning prevents gum disease and tooth decay and improves oral hygiene by removing the plaque and tartar buildup that can cause inflammation and infection.

Is scaling and cleaning painful?

The “No Pain” ultrasonic scaler we use makes the treatment painless in the vast majority of cases. Local anesthesia is still available for very sensitive gums.

How long does a scaling and cleaning appointment take?

Allow thirty to forty-five minutes for a complete scaling and cleaning, and a little longer on your first visit.

Can scaling and cleaning damage my teeth?

No. Ultrasound works on tartar, not on enamel. In fact, it’s tartar buildup that damages teeth and gums.
