Gum graft

Gum graft

A gum graft is a mucogingival surgical procedure that stops gum recession and corrects its effects on the roots and on your smile.

A gum graft ishelpfulfor several reasons

  • It covers exposed roots, which have become more sensitive as the gum has receded.
  • It restores gum height and thickness to strengthen the tissues that support the teeth.
  • It corrects the look of teeth that seem longer and the gaps that have formed between them.
  • It restores the appearance of the gums before an implant is placed in a visible area.

The principle is simple: gum tissue is taken from a donor site and grafted onto the area affected by recession.

Here are thestepsof a gum graft

  1. Preparation

Under local anesthesia, the dentist lifts the weakened gum and may thin it to make room for the graft. A deep cleaning of the roots may be carried out beforehand.

  2. Harvesting

The graft is most often taken from the palate. In some cases, it may come from the wisdom tooth area once those teeth have been extracted.

  3. Suturing

The graft is stitched onto the recipient site. Depending on the technique used, the stitches are removed one to two weeks after the procedure.

A recoverywith peace of mind

Gum grafts have a high success rate. Afterward, brush your teeth while avoiding the grafted area, eat cold, liquid foods and then soft, lukewarm foods, and stop smoking for at least 3 weeks.
