Periodontics
Periodontitis is a common bacterial infection of the tissues that support the teeth. Left untreated, it can cause the gums to recede and even lead to tooth loss.
Periodontitis is drivenby severalfactors
- Poor oral hygiene allows dental plaque to build up and then harden into tartar.
- Smoking, stress and genetics increase the risk of developing periodontal disease.
- Certain conditions, such as diabetes or cardiovascular disease, can make it worse.
- Hormonal changes during pregnancy or menopause, as well as certain medications, also play a role.
At the first signs, such as swollen, dark red gums or gums that bleed easily when brushing, it’s a good idea to see a dentist.
Here are thestepsof periodontal treatment
-
Periodontal assessment
The dentist looks for the causes and aggravating factors, then performs periodontal probing and takes X-rays to measure pocket depth and bone involvement.
-
Oral hygiene
The dentist advises you on brushing and the right tools, and may prescribe an antiseptic mouthwash. The success of treatment depends largely on these new habits.
-
Deep cleaning
Scaling followed by root planing under local anesthesia removes tartar below the gumline. If the damage is too extensive, periodontal surgery may be needed.

Follow-upon a regular basisof the gums
Whatever the treatment, good oral hygiene remains essential. At Aura, a check-up every 3 or 6 months lets us monitor how well the treatment is working over time.

Frequently askedquestions
Have a question?
We’re happy to answer any questions you may have. Feel free to write to us or give us a call.
Is periodontitis the same as gingivitis?
No. Gingivitis is inflammation of the gums, while periodontitis also affects the underlying bone and can lead to tooth loss if left untreated.
Is periodontal treatment painful?
Modern techniques and anesthesia make this care far less uncomfortable. Most patients feel little or no pain during and after treatment.
Are antibiotics enough to treat periodontitis?
Antibiotics can be part of the treatment, but they don’t replace the professional cleaning needed to remove plaque and tartar.
Can periodontitis affect my overall health?
Yes. Studies have linked periodontal disease to other conditions, such as heart disease, diabetes and certain inflammatory diseases.
