Inlays and onlays
Inlays and onlays are custom-made restorations that repair a tooth damaged by decay or a fracture while strengthening its structure.
Inlays and onlays offermanybenefits
- Custom-made, they replicate the anatomy, texture, and shade of your tooth for a natural-looking result.
- They strengthen and protect the tooth for the long term.
- They provide a perfect seal, which lowers the risk of recurrent decay.
- They preserve as much of the natural tooth as possible.
Custom-made in a dental laboratory, inlays and onlays are an indirect restoration technique completed in two stages.
Here are thestepsof getting an inlay or onlay
-
Initial treatment
At the first appointment, your dentist treats the affected tooth, removes any infected tissue, and carefully cleans the area.
-
3D impression
A 3D digital impression of the tooth is taken and sent to the dental laboratory, which crafts the custom-made inlay or onlay.
-
Placement
At a follow-up visit, your dentist places the restoration in the prepared cavity, checks that it fits perfectly, and bonds it permanently to the tooth.

A techniquethat preserves your tooth
Onlays are often preferred for moderate restorations because they preserve more of the natural tooth structure. A crown remains the better choice when a tooth is severely damaged.

Frequently askedquestions
Have a question?
We’re happy to answer any questions you may have. Feel free to write to us or give us a call.
What’s the difference between an inlay and an onlay?
An inlay repairs the central part of the tooth. An onlay is larger and covers one or more cusps, or even the entire chewing surface.
What are onlays made of?
They can be made of ceramic or composite resin. The choice depends on the patient’s and dentist’s preferences, as well as the location of the tooth being restored.
Is an onlay better than a crown?
It all depends on the tooth: an onlay is suited to moderate restorations and preserves more of the natural tooth, while a crown is better for a severely damaged tooth.
How many appointments will I need?
Two stages are required: a first appointment to treat the tooth and take the 3D impression, then a second visit to place and bond the restoration.
